Three Tasmanian were given a lifeline in the recent 2010 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

Sam Isles (originally from Clarence) was picked up by the new Gold Coast franchise after a having a good year with the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL. Isles won the Box Hill Best & Fairest award and also finished third in the association best player award.
He was pick number three overall and part of the first five picks that the Gold Coast could take in the rookie draft & joins fellow Tasmanian’s Maverick Weller & Luke Russell who were picked up early in the year as part of the concessions given to the Gold Coast.

Brodie Moles (originally from Glenorchy) was given a life line by the Western Bulldogs who picked him at number 19.
Moles started his AFL career two years ago when picked up by Geelong in the rookie draft but found it near impossible to get a start in the star-studded midfield down at the cattery.

The last Tasmanian selection was Daniel Archer who played season 2009 with Clarence in the State Wide League.
He was picked in the second round at number 36 by St Kilda.

The AFL grand final was an epic contest that had bookmakers praying to the gods that Geelong would lose the ultimate game of the season.
Bets were placed face to face and on a multitude of online betting agencies. One agency even offering to refund bets of over $200 dollars if the margin was a goal or less.
Bookmarkers were set to lose big due to football betting if Geelong won, which would mean they would have to pay out the huge amount of bets that was placed on Geelong to win and the Geelong/Gary Ablett Brownlow double. This would of been an even bigger disaster if the margin was a goal or less.
When the siren blew the Cats had won by 6 points but Max Rooke had taken a mark within range. The St Kilda players started to walk off in disappointment and Rooke dribbled the ball through to take the margin to twelve points. The bookmakers dodged a bullet here, which could of cost up to 3.2 Million from 16000 punters that took up the offer.

A recent article on afl.com.au about how many players Melbourne will delist at the end of the year has Dean Bailey stating that due to the inclusion of the Gold Coast, clubs will need to be scouring the second tier competitions for new talent.

“Recruiting is going to be an area that we’re going to have to get really good at over the next three or four years, because of the early draft picks going.

“Those players playing in the second tier competitions – the SANFL, WAFL, VFL, AFLQ and the different leagues down in Tasmania now – most clubs are going to be scrutinising them to try and find more players to pick from.” Bailey said.

The Gold Coast team will enter the competition with numerous draft concessions and will pilfer all the quality young stock in the country. See all the concessions here.

Maybe we might see a player or two picked from the Statewide League?

Triabunna held a past players and officials reunion on Saturday (21st July 2007) at their ground which was a celebration of Triabunna premierships especially their 40th anniversary of its 1967 premiership. The day also incorporated the Paul Arnol cup played between Lindisfarne and Triabunna.
Paul Arnol played for both Lindisfarne and Triabunna and won best and fairest at both clubs. He also won an association best and fairest in 1993 while playing for Lindisfarne.
The game was won by Lindisfarne but the Triabunna boys lifted for the occasion and made it hard work for their opposition. Tim Bracken was voted best on ground and won the medal
Gavin Wanganeen was special guest for the celebrations and he and 1996 Port Adelaide draftee Mark Harwood (Triabunna local who played 30 games for the power between 1997 – 2001), who has a family connection to Wanganeen, entertained the crowd with stories and some Q & A.
Being an Essendon supporter I had to stay and listen and found Gavin to be very genuine and he made some great comments on the dedication and hard work that is needed to become an AFL player.
At this stage a point was raised that only 5 senior players had attended Thursday night training before this game, and it is a credit to the club and the decision makers to play some young players that are passionate about football and their club.
It was easy to tell that Triabunna have a number of passionate committee members, supporters and players and need to remain positive and keep focus on taking forward steps to become competitive.

We don’t need another country team to disappear.
