Three Tasmanians Get A Go

Three Tasmanian were given a lifeline in the recent 2010 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

Sam Isles (originally from Clarence) was picked up by the new Gold Coast franchise after a having a good year with the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL. Isles won the Box Hill Best & Fairest award and also finished third in the association best player award.
He was pick number three overall and part of the first five picks that the Gold Coast could take in the rookie draft & joins fellow Tasmanian’s Maverick Weller & Luke Russell who were picked up early in the year as part of the concessions given to the Gold Coast.

Brodie Moles (originally from Glenorchy) was given a life line by the Western Bulldogs who picked him at number 19.
Moles started his AFL career two years ago when picked up by Geelong in the rookie draft but found it near impossible to get a start in the star-studded midfield down at the cattery.

The last Tasmanian selection was Daniel Archer who played season 2009 with Clarence in the State Wide League.
He was picked in the second round at number 36 by St Kilda.

Four Games for Aurora

The Hawks will play their home away from home, Aurora Stadium four times in season 2010 up from the three they played in 2009.

The highlight for Tasmanian fans will be an Anzac Day twighlight/night match against the Kangaroos which will also be new Hawk Josh Gibson’s first encounter against his old side.

It's Time

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has now got his two latest franchises in the Gold Coast and Western Sydney pretty well sown up & now he is eyeing off the future.
Speaking at a La Trobe University alumni function, Demetriou did not rule out future expansion to more than the 18 teams that will be playing in 2012.

Speaking at the function Demetriou said:

…. if we were to have another team down the track you would have to say that Tasmania is the logical place for that team to be, we have expressed that view to the Tasmanian Government.

Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett Responded that the prospect was still many years off & in the interim will foster live AFL games within the state.

Jumping in on the news is also Northern Territory football chief executive Tony Frawley, who has put forward a concept of the Northern Territory and Tasmania joining forces for a 19th AFL licence. Bringing the raw talent of the players from the top end with the rich football history of Tasmania.

Draft Camp Results 2009

The top ten results from the various disciplines in this years draft camp have been released.

In the Three Kilometer time trial, North Hobart’s medium defender Marcus Davies recorded the tenth fastest time of 10:22 which was 39 seconds off the best time of Kallan Geary and 52 seconds off the record. Davies also recorded 15.1 for the beep test which placed him equal second.

Fremantle’s Stephen Hill holds the record in the agility test of 7.77 seconds and this year Tasmanian Jessie Crichton recorded 8.15 seconds to finish the sixth fastest.

In the new Buckley designed kicking test, Ryan Harwood scored an efficiency of 73%. The best efficiency was Gary Rohan with 77%.

Tassie Talent Tested at Camp

Every year 75 of the best young Australian football players in Australia are invited to Canberra to participate in the NAB AFL Draft Camp.

The players are put through a variety of tests, including:

Fitness Assessment (Height/weight, skin folds, arm length, hand span)
Psychomotor Tests (Reaction time, decision making, peripheral awareness)
Sprint, agility, vertical jump testing
Shuttle Run (the infamous beep test)
3km Time-trail
General skills test
one-on-one interview with clubs

The camp is a key event in the lead-up to November’s NAB AFL Draft and four young Tasmanian’s are being tested at the camp.

The Tasmanians are; Glenorchy midfielder Ryan Harwood, North Hobart half-back Marcus Davies, Launceston ruckman Joseph Groenewegen and North Launceston midfielder Jesse Crichton.

The AFL grand final was an epic contest that had bookmakers praying to the gods that Geelong would lose the ultimate game of the season.
Bets were placed face to face and on a multitude of online betting agencies. One agency even offering to refund bets of over $200 dollars if the margin was a goal or less.
Bookmarkers were set to lose big due to football betting if Geelong won, which would mean they would have to pay out the huge amount of bets that was placed on Geelong to win and the Geelong/Gary Ablett Brownlow double. This would of been an even bigger disaster if the margin was a goal or less.
When the siren blew the Cats had won by 6 points but Max Rooke had taken a mark within range. The St Kilda players started to walk off in disappointment and Rooke dribbled the ball through to take the margin to twelve points. The bookmakers dodged a bullet here, which could of cost up to 3.2 Million from 16000 punters that took up the offer.

This years upcoming Mick Callinan Fund Charity Dinner is to be held on Saturday 7th November 2009.

For those that dont know about the Mick Callinan Fund I have sourced some information from the web site:

The Mick Callinan Fund was established in August 2005 at the request of Mick Callinan who passed away on 3rd December 2005. Mick was a successful junior football coach and mentors to literally hundreds of young men, shaping them as footballers and many who have gone on to other successful ventures both sporting and in business life.

It was Mick’s intention to carry on what he’d been doing throughout his life by continuing his legacy after he had left us. Thus, the committee was formed and with Mick’s instructions he wished for us to hold an annual charity dinner to provide a vehicle for the fund to raise money to be distributed between Cancer Council of Tasmania for cancer research and financial assistance for junior sports players, sporting clubs and community groups.

This years event will be held in the Tasman room at the Wrest Point Casino and tickets are on sale now by contacting Janine at Wrest Point Service Centre on 03 6221 1706. Tickets cost $110.00 (or $1000.00 per table of 10). This includes a 3 course meal, all your basic beer, wine, & soft drink (until 11.30pm), guest speakers, comedian (Gavin Baskerville) and local band RPM (members of popular local Hobart band Morning Glory).

Guests include Brad Johnson (Western Bulldogs), Michael O’Loughlin (Sydney Swans) and Ursula Beck (Aust Female Body Building Champion).

Will South Africa Get A Team Before Us

It's Time

I found with interest a recent article written by Tim Harcourt in the Sydney Morning Herald. It was about how the AFL is growing it’s international interests to satisfy a variety economic reasons.

One point that was made in the article was:

But it’s not just expatriates playing for fun; the AFL is organising matches around the world on a regular basis now. As well as the UAE, there are regular matches in South Africa, as there will soon be as many AFL footballers in South Africa as in Tasmania.

Could this mean we could expect a South African team to enter the AFL after the Gold Coast and West Sydney.

It was also noted in the article that the AFL are not after global domination, they want to grow the international participation in the game, to serve the Australian expatriate market and to grow the game financially among Australian and international business interests, and the main focus is directed towards national development hence the Gold Coast and Western Sydney.

If the AFL are devoted to growing their brand nationally then why do they keep snubbing a Tasmanian proposal! Why – Because the dollars are not in Tasmania. Why invest in Tassie when the returns are not going to be there.
They can just keep plundering our talent until the game is dead in our state. By then their will be plenty of young South Africans getting their names called out on draft day.

Paine-full weekend

Clarence Statewide Premiers

It was a painful weekend if your team went down in the big dance over the weekend, but for one family I doubt it could have got any better.

For the Paine family, Tim scored his maiden first-class century for Australia during the week and that was then followed up on Saturday by his brother Nick who led Clarence to a one goal premiership win over the hot favourites Glenorchy.
