Tour Down Under

Two Tasmanian cyclist are currently competing in  this years Santos Tour Down Under,  joing the likes of Lance Armstrong, Oscar Pereiro & Cadel Evans.  They are the Launceston duo of Matthew Goss & Wesley Sulzberger.

Matthew Goss wears bib number 46 and rides for Team HTC – Columbia (USA) and Wesley Sulzberger will wear number 101 and rides for the French team Francaise Des Jeux.

After stage one which was held today, Goss & Sulzberger finished with the main field with a time of 3.15’30″.

  • 12 Year history – ProTour status in 2008
  • Teams compete for UCI ranking points
  • The only tour held outside of Europe
  • The Leaders jersey is Ochre

This years event has been stymied by the lack of sponsorship available and the Latrobe club secretary Dennis Chugg has said that the club required $40,000 in sponsorship by the end of this week to be held.

A meeting was held yesterday with Tasmanian sports minister, Michelle O’Byrne and apparently some anonymous sponsors have come forward.

If the event does not go ahead it will be only the second time in it’s history that it has been cancelled. The other time being during World War II.

At the moment it is only a 50/50 proposition, but better than what it looked a fortnight ago.

Bernard Sulzberger

On the heels of local cyclist Richie Porte’s win in last years Tour Of Tasmania, Bernard Sulzberger makes it two years running for a Tasmanian to win the tour.

He has been cycling in amateur teams in Italy for the last two years with strong results and should hopefully receive a professional contract soon.
